Who was St. Benedict?
St. Benedict of Nursia (c. 480–547) was a Christian monk who founded the Benedictine monastic tradition and wrote The Rule of St. Benedict, a guide for monastic life centered on prayer, work (ora et labora), and communal discipline. Living during the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, Benedict provided stability in a time of political and social turmoil. His rule emphasized obedience, humility, and a structured daily schedule, offering a model for self-sufficient communities that preserved learning, order, and Christian faith. Benedictine monasteries became centers of education, agriculture, and hospitality, playing a crucial role in rebuilding European civilization in the medieval era.
