Chalking the Doors: Blessing the Chapel for Epiphany

For Epiphany, we gathered at Canterbury’s chapel doors to mark the season with the traditional chalking of the doors.

With white chalk, we inscribed 20+C+M+B+25 above the doors, invoking the blessing of Christ through the initials of the legendary Magi—Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar—while also signifying the Latin prayer Christus Mansionem Benedicat (“May Christ bless this house”).

Our students participated by praying the Epiphany collect together, asking for the light of Christ to shine in our hearts as it did for the wise men of old.

The Collect

O GOD, who by the leading of a star didst manifest thy only-begotten Son to the Gentiles; Mercifully grant that we, who know thee now by faith, may after this life have the fruition of thy glorious Godhead; through the same thy Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
